Sketching Wis. King Vets’ Home Historic village before demolition , May 2021

The National Historic Register  “Veterans Cottages Historic District” at the Vets Home in King is  about to demolished.  We sketched there May 19 and 20th. Demolition was to have begun May 10 and no one at King really knows when the crews will be there but they are expected before June 2021. This is a last chance opportunity for these little gems.  All the cottages except the one that has been moved to next to the chapel will be torn down.  The commandant’s house will remain, hoping for eventual grant to restore it.

July 2021 UPDATE: No more cottages. 😦

They are gone. We hope you did your sketches or at least have some photos.

Open Air Sketching: May 8, 2021 Waupaca, WI; Rotary RiverView Park

Enjoy the spring setting on the Waupaca River Saturday May 8 from 9 AM till 11:30. 100 Cooper St., Waupaca, Wisconsin. Find the park behind the east side of north Main Street. The access at the far north end at the Danes Hall is closed, as is all of North Main, so use the narrow street that goes by old St Mary Magdalene’s church and then down to the river. There’s plenty of parking and a shelter. Paint the river, people fishing, the two bridges, or the interesting backsides of the buildings with their rickety stairs.

Open Air Sketching Stone Bridge, Scandinavia, WI, APR 10, 2021

It’s time to get back to some plein air sketching. Join us north of Waupaca, WI in the village of Scandinavia for a morning’s sketch outing 9AM till 11:30 AM Apr 10, 2021.

Park anywhere except in front of the fire department garage.  There is a stone bridge downstream, a dam and millpond upstream, and a short section of riffles between.   We can’t promise that the fish will be still spawning Saturday, but Wednesday afternoon, the waters were filled with thrashing.
There’s a coffee shop across from the Post Office : ScandiHus, so you can always take a break for a cuppa with outside and inside seating and the Trout Bum Bakery right on the creek.
Feel free to sketch from photographs if you are not comfortable in an open air situation yet.   Send photos of your work if you would like them posted.

December 2020 Sketching: Open-Grown Oak

Single oaks exhibit a classic form, perhaps not graceful, but with their own particular symmetry. Look for them along field fences or in cemeteries where they have been growing, uncrowded, socially isolated for a hundred + years.
