Join us for a morning of sketching and painting Saturday, Sept 9, 2023 in the yard of Jim Lang’s Pottery studio at N2810 Hill St., Waupaca, WI, 9 AM to noon.
Bring a stool and your painting supplies. Anyone is welcome. Expect chickens and faded garden flowers, and interesting architectural elements

Use these Saturday outings for quick sketches or to work on your techniques, or simply as an excuse to get out and enjoy. No registration needed: come once in a while, or regularly. We are part of an international group of sketchers UrbanSketchers, whose goal is to meet regularly, without fees, to sketch what is in front of us and share it online. We have special permission for access to one of the home’s riverside yards, so please email Peggy and Jan at OpenAirSketchGroupATgmailDOTcom for the house number and parking directions for the waterfall and covered bridge. Otherwise, the entire village is picturesque and you won’t lack for inspiration just wandering on your own.

Open Air Sketching, Peterson Mills, Waupaca, WI, April 8, 2023

With April, you never know whether it will be a snowy or a more spring-like view.
Saturday, April 8, 2023 , 9 till noon, sketch at Peterson Mills, at the intersection of Gurholt Road, Peterson Road, and County V at approximately N5491 Peterson Road, Scandinavia, WI.
Paint from your car or bring a chair, and your painting supplies. Anyone is welcome. It’s a beautiful location with barn buildings reflected in a millpond and green (or brown, or white) rolling hills all around. Park on Gurholt Road, leaving room for farm equipment to get by.

No pressure, no registration, no specific skill level expectation. Anyone is welcome. There’s no sign-up, no stress, no expectations, no “membership;” just a chance to practice some open air art. Come once in a while, or regularly on the second Saturday of each month. Watch this site for locations for each month.

Open Air Sketching , Village of Rural, Waupaca Co., WI, Sept 10, 2022

Light sprinkles the second half of the morning sent some to the protection of the covered bridge or under the pines; but a few drops of rain on watercolor wash is not always a bad thing! These are some of the pieces produced on location in Rural on Sat Sept 10, 2022.

Join us for a morning of sketching and painting Saturday, Sept 10, 2022 in the historic village of Rural, WI just south of Waupaca, WI 9 AM to noon.
Bring a chair and your painting supplies. Anyone is welcome. The entire village is on the Historic Record, so expect to be confounded by the choices of really interesting painting spots. Give yourself some extra time to walk the six or seven blocks worth of Yankee style homes that date as early as the 1850s.

Rural, WI; Waupaca County

There’s also a great barn, houses with cupolas, a hilltop cemetery, a couple bridges, gardens, gazebos, still reflecting water, rushing waterfalls, and occasional kayakers coming down the Crystal River: plenty of inspiration. There are plenty of great views from your car as well should the weather turn iffy.

Use these Saturday outings for quick sketches or to work on new techniques, for a masterpiece, or simply an excuse to get out and enjoy some quiet time. No pressure, no registration, no specific skill level expectation. Come once in a while, or regularly — whatever suits your schedule or mood.

Open Air Sketching July 2019… airport, horses, tractors

There’s so much to do in July. Here are 3 outings to put on your calendar:

June 29 and July 4 … Barrel Racing at Over Yonder

July 13 at the tiny airport east of Iola, with a side trip to the Iola Car Show

July 26, 26, 28 at the Symco Thresheree to see all the old farm equipment you can imagine.

Enjoy breakfast at the grass-field airport between Iola and Ogdensburg Saturday July 13, 2019 and have a chance to sketch planes and people and pancakes( and sausage and eggs) or take the shuttle to the Iola Car Show for more cars and people. Sketching from 9 to 11 AM.

Symco Thresheree at the end of July is a jump back in time… You’ll find farming equipment, ice cream making, weaving, old fashion playground equipment, a grist mill grinding flour, food, music, and TRACTORS. Lots of fun and an infinite source of sketching scenes.

Open Air Sketching Jan 12, 2019: Frozen Lakes at King Veterans Home

Sketching event: Marden Center, Wis Veterans Home at King, Saturday Jan. 12, 2018, 9:15 AM till noon. Inside sketching opportunities: Views of snow covered Rainbow Lake; OR from-your-car or seated outside:  the lake, of course, but also the vacant Victorian Cottages and Commandant’s House by famous architect William Waters. Marden Center has 3 levels with large windows and seating on all levels.  Plus a coffee shop.  Click for map.  Address: N2665 Cty. Open Air Sketching : Back to the 50’s at Greg’s Speed Shop

Sketching event: Back to the 1950s Nov 10, 2018, 9:15 AM, Saturday, at Greg’s hot rod shop E4259 East Gate Drive, Waupaca, WI.  Inside sketching opportunities: old filing station items, old signs, “mid-century” kitchen; hats, shoes, aprons, dresses, and suits from the 1950s,  and hot rods under restoration.

Join us for coffee and muffins at Greg’s even if you aren’t sketching on this go-around…   and on second Saturdays of every month. No stress, no sign up, no fees, just sketching or whatever for a couple hours with some conversation along the way. Bring a friend. Slow your pace.

Directions for Nov 10: From Hwy 10, take County A, just east of Fleet farm. Go south on A and turn east towards Appleton on the Eastgate frontage road.. Don’t turn onto the on-ramp for Hwy 10 by mistake. Greg’s Speed Shop is directly across from the Waupaca airport. Map.

Open Air Sketching Report: Rural, Wi;

Sketching event: Oct 13, 2018, 9:00 AM, Saturday, in Rural Wisconsin.  Park at the old store at the intersection of Main and Cleghorn just north of the bridge.  Or stay warmer and use your car as a studio. Sketching opportunities: water cascade, old bridges, historic homes from the stagecoach era, water reflections.  To get to the village of Rural, take Hwy 22 South a short distance from Waupaca, WI and turn east on Rural Road.

Open Air Sketching: Hidden Studios

Hidden Studios Tour sketching photos below.

Though the Hidden Studios Art Tour doesn’t fall on a 2nd Saturday, when others have done the prep work,  we’re all for taking advantage: the three-day Hidden Studios Art Tour opens 10 studios to the public just once a year, the Cemetery Association at South New Hope knows just the right time to hold a pie social, and Mother Nature provides the wonderful fall color backdrop.   Sketch at Sharon Fujimoto’s glass blowing studio 10491 Trout Creek Road, Amherst Junction, WI 54407 at 10 AM Saturday and then skip over to the church for some pie and another sketch at 11:30 AM, and finish off with an autumn sketch of the barn on Co T and Bestul Rd. a mile south of the church… always a beautiful color spot.  Design your own route, if you wish, but do stop for pie between 11:30-12:30 to compare notes on the morning’s painting spots.
